Here's Why We're Not At All Concerned With OptiCept Technologies' (STO:OPTI) Cash Burn Situation

We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?

So should OptiCept Technologies (STO:OPTI) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

Does OptiCept Technologies Have A Long Cash Runway?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When OptiCept Technologies last reported its balance sheet in December 2021, it had zero debt and cash worth kr68m. Importantly, its cash burn was kr49m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of approximately 17 months from December 2021. Notably, however, the one analyst we see covering the stock thinks that OptiCept Technologies will break even (at a free cash flow level) before then. In that case, it may never reach the end of its cash runway. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

How Is OptiCept Technologies' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

In our view, OptiCept Technologies doesn't yet produce significant amounts of operating revenue, since it reported just kr15m in the last twelve months. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis we'll focus on how the cash burn is tracking. The skyrocketing cash burn up 181% year on year certainly tests our nerves. That sort of spending growth rate can't continue for very long before it causes balance sheet weakness, generally speaking. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.

How Easily Can OptiCept Technologies Raise Cash?

While OptiCept Technologies does have a solid cash runway, its cash burn trajectory may have some shareholders thinking ahead to when the company may need to raise more cash. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

OptiCept Technologies has a market capitalisation of kr1.2b and burnt through kr49m last year, which is 4.1% of the company's market value. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.

Is OptiCept Technologies' Cash Burn A Worry?

As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about OptiCept Technologies' cash burn. For example, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap suggests that the company is on a good path. While we must concede that its increasing cash burn is a bit worrying, the other factors mentioned in this article provide great comfort when it comes to the cash burn. It's clearly very positive to see that at least one analyst is forecasting the company will break even fairly soon. Taking all the factors in this report into account, we're not at all worried about its cash burn, as the business appears well capitalized to spend as needs be. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 3 warning signs for OptiCept Technologies (of which 1 is a bit concerning!) you should know about.
