The board of Epiroc AB (publ) (STO:EPI A) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 25th of October, with investors receiving SEK1.90 per share. Despite this raise, the dividend yield of 1.8% is only a modest boost to shareholder returns.

Epiroc's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Epiroc's earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 32.2%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 42% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Epiroc Is Still Building Its Track Record
The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 5 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. Since 2019, the annual payment back then was SEK2.10, compared to the most recent full-year payment of SEK3.80. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 13% a year over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.
The Dividend Has Growth Potential
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Epiroc has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 9.7% per annum. Shareholders are getting plenty of the earnings returned to them, which combined with strong growth makes this quite appealing.
Epiroc Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
