Here's Why I Think AQ Group (STO:AQ) Is An Interesting Stock

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like AQ Group (STO:AQ), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is AQ Group Increasing Earnings Per Share?

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Who among us would not applaud AQ Group's stratospheric annual EPS growth of 45%, compound, over the last three years? Growth that fast may well be fleeting, but like a lotus blooming from a murky pond, it sparks joy for the wary stock pickers.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). AQ Group maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 7.6% to kr5.2b. That's a real positive.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.

Are AQ Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

The good news for AQ Group shareholders is that no insiders reported selling shares in the last year. So it's definitely nice that Ragnar Koppel bought kr145k worth of shares at an average price of around kr321.

On top of the insider buying, we can also see that AQ Group insiders own a large chunk of the company. Actually, with 39% of the company to their names, insiders are profoundly invested in the business. I'm reassured by this kind of alignment, as it suggests the business will be run for the benefit of shareholders. And their holding is extremely valuable at the current share price, totalling kr2.4b. That means they have plenty of their own capital riding on the performance of the business!

Does AQ Group Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

AQ Group's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. The incing on the cake is that insiders own a large chunk of the company and one has even been buying more shares. Because of the potential that it has reached an inflection point, I'd suggest AQ Group belongs on the top of your watchlist. Now, you could try to make up your mind on AQ Group by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.

There are plenty of other companies that have insiders buying up shares. So if you like the sound of AQ Group, you'll probably love this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying.
