Dometic Group AB (publ)'s (STO:DOM) Stock On An Uptrend: Could Fundamentals Be Driving The Momentum?
Dometic Group's (STO:DOM) stock is up by a considerable 25% over the past three months. As most would know, fundamentals are what usually guide market price movements over the long-term, so we decided to look at the company's key financial indicators today to determine if they have any role to play in the recent price movement. Specifically, we decided to study Dometic Group's ROE in this article.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.

How Is ROE Calculated?
ROE can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Dometic Group is:
4.6% = kr1.3b ÷ kr28b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. Another way to think of that is that for every SEK1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn SEK0.05 in profit.
Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
Dometic Group's Earnings Growth And 4.6% ROE
When you first look at it, Dometic Group's ROE doesn't look that attractive. Next, when compared to the average industry ROE of 12%, the company's ROE leaves us feeling even less enthusiastic. As a result, Dometic Group reported a very low income growth of 3.9% over the past five years.
As a next step, we compared Dometic Group's net income growth with the industry and found that the company has a similar growth figure when compared with the industry average growth rate of 3.3% in the same period.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Has the market priced in the future outlook for DOM? Is Dometic Group Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?
Despite having a normal three-year median payout ratio of 44% (or a retention ratio of 56% over the past three years, Dometic Group has seen very little growth in earnings as we saw above. Therefore, there might be some other reasons to explain the lack in that respect. For example, the business could be in decline.
Moreover, Dometic Group has been paying dividends for seven years, which is a considerable amount of time, suggesting that management must have perceived that the shareholders prefer dividends over earnings growth. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company is expected to keep paying out approximately 42% of its profits over the next three years. Regardless, the future ROE for Dometic Group is predicted to rise to 7.4% despite there being not much change expected in its payout ratio.
Summary
On the whole, we do feel that Dometic Group has some positive attributes. That is, a decent growth in earnings backed by a high rate of reinvestment. However, we do feel that that earnings growth could have been higher if the business were to improve on the low ROE rate. Especially given how the company is reinvesting a huge chunk of its profits. With that said, the latest industry analyst forecasts reveal that the company's earnings are expected to accelerate.
