Is Almarai Company's (TADAWUL:2280) Stock Price Struggling As A Result Of Its Mixed Financials?
Almarai (TADAWUL:2280) has had a rough three months with its share price down 6.7%. We, however decided to study the company's financials to determine if they have got anything to do with the price decline. Stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financial performance over the long term, and therefore we decided to pay more attention to the company's financial performance. Specifically, we decided to study Almarai's ROE in this article.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
The formula for ROE is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Almarai is:
12% = ر.س2.3b ÷ ر.س19b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
The 'return' is the yearly profit. So, this means that for every SAR1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of SAR0.12.
What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
Almarai's Earnings Growth And 12% ROE
As you can see, Almarai's ROE looks pretty weak. Even compared to the average industry ROE of 18%, the company's ROE is quite dismal. Thus, the low net income growth of 2.9% seen by Almarai over the past five years could probably be the result of it having a lower ROE.
We then compared Almarai's net income growth with the industry and found that the company's growth figure is lower than the average industry growth rate of 16% in the same 5-year period, which is a bit concerning.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. What is 2280 worth today? Is Almarai Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
Despite having a moderate three-year median payout ratio of 50% (implying that the company retains the remaining 50% of its income), Almarai's earnings growth was quite low. Therefore, there might be some other reasons to explain the lack in that respect. For example, the business could be in decline.
Additionally, Almarai has paid dividends over a period of at least ten years, which means that the company's management is determined to pay dividends even if it means little to no earnings growth. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company's future payout ratio is expected to drop to 36% over the next three years. However, the company's ROE is not expected to change by much despite the lower expected payout ratio.
Summary
In total, we're a bit ambivalent about Almarai's performance. While the company does have a high rate of reinvestment, the low ROE means that all that reinvestment is not reaping any benefit to its investors, and moreover, its having a negative impact on the earnings growth. With that said, the latest industry analyst forecasts reveal that the company's earnings are expected to accelerate.
