Take Care Before Jumping Onto S.C. Helios S.A. (BVB:HEAL) Even Though It's 25% Cheaper

The S.C. Helios S.A. (BVB:HEAL) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 87%, which is great even in a bull market.

Following the heavy fall in price, given about half the companies in Romania have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may consider S.C. Helios as a highly attractive investment with its 6.1x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, S.C. Helios has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as S.C. Helios' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 35%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 53% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to shrink 3.3% in the next 12 months, the company's positive momentum based on recent medium-term earnings results is a bright spot for the moment.

With this information, we find it very odd that S.C. Helios is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On S.C. Helios' P/E

Having almost fallen off a cliff, S.C. Helios' share price has pulled its P/E way down as well. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that S.C. Helios currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year earnings growth is beating forecasts for a struggling market. We think potential risks might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio and share price. Perhaps there is some hesitation about the company's ability to stay its recent course and swim against the current of the broader market turmoil. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because this relative performance should normally provide a boost to the share price.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with S.C. Helios, and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
