Sphera Franchise Group (BVB:SFG) Is Increasing Its Dividend To RON1.09

The board of Sphera Franchise Group S.A. (BVB:SFG) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of RON1.09 on the 6th of June, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the annual payment to 2.7% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Sphera Franchise Group's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Sphera Franchise Group's earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 23.2%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 32% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Sphera Franchise Group's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

It's comforting to see that Sphera Franchise Group has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. The annual payment during the last 6 years was RON0.352 in 2019, and the most recent fiscal year payment was RON1.09. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 21% a year over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. We are encouraged to see that Sphera Franchise Group has grown earnings per share at 12% per year over the past five years. Since earnings per share is growing at an acceptable rate, and the payout policy is balanced, we think the company is positioning itself well to grow earnings and dividends in the future.

We Really Like Sphera Franchise Group's Dividend

Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. For instance, we've picked out 1 warning sign for Sphera Franchise Group that investors should take into consideration.
