Passus S.A.'s (WSE:PAS) Shares Leap 26% Yet They're Still Not Telling The Full Story

Despite an already strong run, Passus S.A. (WSE:PAS) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 36% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Passus' P/S ratio of 0.7x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the IT industry in Poland is also close to 0.8x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Passus Has Been Performing

The revenue growth achieved at Passus over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think this respectable revenue growth might not be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Passus' to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 20% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 71% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 3.5% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

With this information, we find it interesting that Passus is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

What We Can Learn From Passus' P/S?

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Passus' P/S is back within range of the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Passus currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. There could be some unobserved threats to revenue preventing the P/S ratio from matching this positive performance. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for Passus (2 are concerning!) that you need to be mindful of.
