Analysts Just Shaved Their CD Projekt S.A. (WSE:CDR) Forecasts Dramatically
The analysts covering CD Projekt S.A. (WSE:CDR) delivered a dose of negativity to shareholders today, by making a substantial revision to their statutory forecasts for this year. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) estimates were cut sharply as analysts factored in the latest outlook for the business, concluding that they were too optimistic previously.
Following the latest downgrade, the current consensus, from the 15 analysts covering CD Projekt, is for revenues of zł867m in 2022, which would reflect a discernible 2.4% reduction in CD Projekt's sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are presumed to shoot up 34% to zł2.78. Previously, the analysts had been modelling revenues of zł1.2b and earnings per share (EPS) of zł4.96 in 2022. It looks like analyst sentiment has declined substantially, with a sizeable cut to revenue estimates and a pretty serious decline to earnings per share numbers as well.

Despite the cuts to forecast earnings, there was no real change to the zł158 price target, showing that the analysts don't think the changes have a meaningful impact on its intrinsic value. There's another way to think about price targets though, and that's to look at the range of price targets put forward by analysts, because a wide range of estimates could suggest a diverse view on possible outcomes for the business. Currently, the most bullish analyst values CD Projekt at zł239 per share, while the most bearish prices it at zł100.00. This is a fairly broad spread of estimates, suggesting that the analysts are forecasting a wide range of possible outcomes for the business.
Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast annualised revenue decline of 2.4% by the end of 2022. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 35% over the last five years. Compare this with our data, which suggests that other companies in the same industry are, in aggregate, expected to see their revenue grow 18% per year. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - CD Projekt is expected to lag the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The biggest issue in the new estimates is that analysts have reduced their earnings per share estimates, suggesting business headwinds lay ahead for CD Projekt. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that CD Projekt's revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. We're also surprised to see that the price target went unchanged. Still, deteriorating business conditions (assuming accurate forecasts!) can be a leading indicator for the stock price, so we wouldn't blame investors for being more cautious on CD Projekt after the downgrade.
With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for CD Projekt going out to 2024, and you can see them free on our platform here.
