Has Odlewnie Polskie (WSE:ODL) Got What It Takes To Become A Multi-Bagger?
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. That's why when we briefly looked at Odlewnie Polskie's (WSE:ODL) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Odlewnie Polskie, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.20 = zł17m ÷ (zł113m - zł24m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).
So, Odlewnie Polskie has an ROCE of 20%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Metals and Mining industry average of 9.2% it's much better.

While the past is not representative of the future, it can be helpful to know how a company has performed historically, which is why we have this chart above. If you want to delve into the historical earnings, revenue and cash flow of Odlewnie Polskie, check out these free graphs here.
How Are Returns Trending?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. The company has employed 75% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 20%. Since 20% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
On a side note, Odlewnie Polskie has done well to reduce current liabilities to 21% of total assets over the last five years. Effectively suppliers now fund less of the business, which can lower some elements of risk.
The Bottom Line
To sum it up, Odlewnie Polskie has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. Therefore it's no surprise that shareholders have earned a respectable 97% return if they held over the last five years. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
