I Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Massmedica (WSE:MSM) Passed With Ease
It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Massmedica (WSE:MSM). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Massmedica's Improving Profits
Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So EPS growth can certainly encourage an investor to take note of a stock. It is therefore awe-striking that Massmedica's EPS went from zł0.092 to zł0.31 in just one year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company. Could this be a sign that the business has reached an inflection point?
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While we note Massmedica's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 36% to zł22m. That's a real positive.

Since Massmedica is no giant, with a market capitalization of zł16m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.
Are Massmedica Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Massmedica insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. Indeed, with a collective holding of 81%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. Valued at only zł16m Massmedica is really small for a listed company. That means insiders only have zł13m worth of shares, despite the large proportional holding. That might not be a huge sum but it should be enough to keep insiders motivated!
Should You Add Massmedica To Your Watchlist?
Massmedica's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Massmedica for a spot on your watchlist. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Massmedica has 5 warning signs (and 4 which are a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
Although Massmedica certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
