ONICO S.A. (WSE:ONC) Surges 29% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

ONICO S.A. (WSE:ONC) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.

Although its price has surged higher, it would still be understandable if you think ONICO is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.2x, considering almost half the companies in Poland's Oil and Gas industry have P/S ratios above 1.2x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How ONICO Has Been Performing

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at ONICO over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For ONICO?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like ONICO's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 68%. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 11% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 61% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

With this information, we can see why ONICO is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.

What Does ONICO's P/S Mean For Investors?

Despite ONICO's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our examination of ONICO confirms that the company's revenue trends over the past three-year years are a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, as we suspected, given they fall short of current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for ONICO that you need to be mindful of.
