To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in Dekpol's (WSE:DEK) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Dekpol:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.13 = zł76m ÷ (zł1.1b - zł494m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2021).
So, Dekpol has an ROCE of 13%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Construction industry average of 12%.

The Trend Of ROCE
Dekpol is displaying some positive trends. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 13%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it's worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 135%. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at Dekpol thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.
On a separate but related note, it's important to know that Dekpol has a current liabilities to total assets ratio of 46%, which we'd consider pretty high. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
The Bottom Line On Dekpol's ROCE
In summary, it's great to see that Dekpol can compound returns by consistently reinvesting capital at increasing rates of return, because these are some of the key ingredients of those highly sought after multi-baggers. Since the stock has returned a solid 82% to shareholders over the last five years, it's fair to say investors are beginning to recognize these changes. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
One more thing: We've identified 3 warning signs with Dekpol (at least 1 which is a bit concerning) , and understanding them would certainly be useful.
