Does Auckland International Airport (NZSE:AIA) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?

When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that at December 2022 Auckland International Airport had debt of NZ$1.64b, up from NZ$1.48b in one year. On the flip side, it has NZ$62.8m in cash leading to net debt of about NZ$1.58b.
How Strong Is Auckland International Airport's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, Auckland International Airport had liabilities of NZ$673.0m due within 12 months, and liabilities of NZ$1.50b due beyond 12 months. Offsetting this, it had NZ$62.8m in cash and NZ$80.4m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling NZ$2.03b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
Given Auckland International Airport has a market capitalization of NZ$12.8b, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. Having said that, it's clear that we should continue to monitor its balance sheet, lest it change for the worse.
We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.
With a net debt to EBITDA ratio of 5.7, it's fair to say Auckland International Airport does have a significant amount of debt. However, its interest coverage of 2.8 is reasonably strong, which is a good sign. However, it should be some comfort for shareholders to recall that Auckland International Airport actually grew its EBIT by a hefty 592%, over the last 12 months. If it can keep walking that path it will be in a position to shed its debt with relative ease. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. We should also note that Infrastructure industry companies like Auckland International Airport commonly do use debt without problems. We think that Auckland International Airport's debt does make it a bit risky, after considering the aforementioned data points together. Not all risk is bad, as it can boost share price returns if it pays off, but this debt risk is worth keeping in mind. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start.
