Spark New Zealand's (NZSE:SPK) Shareholders Will Receive A Smaller Dividend Than Last Year

Spark New Zealand Limited (NZSE:SPK) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to NZ$0.1415 on the 3rd of October. However, the dividend yield of 9.9% is still a decent boost to shareholder returns.

Spark New Zealand's Projections Indicate Future Payments May Be Unsustainable

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, the company wasn't making enough to cover what it was paying to shareholders. Without profits and cash flows increasing, it would be difficult for the company to continue paying the dividend at this level.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 16.9%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 187%, which probably can't continue without putting some pressure on the balance sheet.

Spark New Zealand Has A Solid Track Record

The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from NZ$0.18 total annually to NZ$0.25. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 3.3% over that duration. Dividends have grown relatively slowly, which is not great, but some investors may value the relative consistency of the dividend.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. Spark New Zealand's earnings per share has shrunk at 10% a year over the past five years. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. On the bright side, earnings are predicted to gain some ground over the next year, but until this turns into a pattern we wouldn't be feeling too comfortable.

Spark New Zealand's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. The payout levels might be a bit high for our liking, but we can't deny that until now, the payments have been pretty consistent. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. To that end, Spark New Zealand has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit concerning) we think you should know about. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
