Odfjell SE's (OB:ODF) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 29%

Odfjell SE (OB:ODF) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 29% share price jump in the last month. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 67%.

Even after such a large jump in price, Odfjell may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 5.9x, since almost half of all companies in Norway have P/E ratios greater than 12x and even P/E's higher than 23x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Odfjell has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Odfjell's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 43% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 627% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 8.0% per annum over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 19% growth each year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Odfjell's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Final Word

Despite Odfjell's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of Odfjell's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Odfjell, and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
