Telenor Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Despite not being profitable, Telenor is paying out most of its free cash flow as a dividend. Paying a dividend while unprofitable is generally considered an aggressive policy, and with limited funds retained for reinvestment, growth may be slow.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 182.8%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could get very high, which probably can't continue without starting to put some pressure on the balance sheet.
Telenor Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The annual payment during the last 10 years was NOK7.00 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was NOK9.50. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 3.1% over that duration. Although we can't deny that the dividend has been remarkably stable in the past, the growth has been pretty muted.
Dividend Growth Is Doubtful
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. However, initial appearances might be deceiving. Telenor has seen earnings per share falling at 9.2% per year over the last five years. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. Earnings are forecast to grow over the next 12 months and if that happens we could still be a little bit cautious until it becomes a pattern.
Telenor's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. Although they have been consistent in the past, we think the payments are a little high to be sustained. We don't think Telenor is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. To that end, Telenor has 2 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
