Why We're Not Concerned About Mowi ASA's (OB:MOWI) Share Price

Mowi ASA's (OB:MOWI) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.7x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Norway, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 12x and even P/E's below 6x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

With earnings growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Mowi has been relatively sluggish. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this lacklustre earnings performance will improve markedly. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Mowi's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Mowi would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 5.4%. Still, lamentably EPS has fallen 3.9% in aggregate from three years ago, which is disappointing. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 27% per annum during the coming three years according to the ten analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 16% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Mowi's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Mowi's P/E

While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Mowi's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
