How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

To properly understand Aker BioMarine's profit results, we need to consider the US$500k expense attributed to unusual items. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. If Aker BioMarine doesn't see those unusual expenses repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to increase over the coming year.

An Unusual Tax Situation

Having already discussed the impact of the unusual items, we should also note that Aker BioMarine received a tax benefit of US$25m. This is of course a bit out of the ordinary, given it is more common for companies to be paying tax than receiving tax benefits! The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. And since it previously lost money, it may well simply indicate the realisation of past tax losses. However, the devil in the detail is that these kind of benefits only impact in the year they are booked, and are often one-off in nature. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal. So while we think it's great to receive a tax benefit, it does tend to imply an increased risk that the statutory profit overstates the sustainable earnings power of the business.

Our Take On Aker BioMarine's Profit Performance

In its last report Aker BioMarine received a tax benefit which might make its profit look better than it really is on a underlying level. Having said that, it also had a unusual item reducing its profit. Having considered these factors, we don't think Aker BioMarine's statutory profits give an overly harsh view of the business. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. While conducting our analysis, we found that Aker BioMarine has 2 warning signs and it would be unwise to ignore these.
