Ocean GeoLoop AS (OB:OCEAN) Stock Rockets 70% But Many Are Still Ignoring The Company

Ocean GeoLoop AS (OB:OCEAN) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 70% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 23% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, Ocean GeoLoop may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.5x, since almost half of all companies in the Commercial Services industry in Norway have P/S ratios greater than 9.6x and even P/S higher than 184x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Ocean GeoLoop Performed Recently?

With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Ocean GeoLoop has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Ocean GeoLoop, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Ocean GeoLoop's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 36% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, aided by its incredible short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a tremendous job of growing revenue over that time.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 72%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

With this information, we find it odd that Ocean GeoLoop is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Final Word

Shares in Ocean GeoLoop have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of Ocean GeoLoop revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see robust revenue growth that outpaces the industry, we presume that there are notable underlying risks to the company's future performance, which is exerting downward pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
