Multiconsult's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, Multiconsult's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 3.4% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 75%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Multiconsult's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Multiconsult has been paying dividends for a while, but the track record isn't stellar. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. Since 2016, the dividend has gone from NOK2.90 total annually to NOK10.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 15% per annum over that time. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Multiconsult has impressed us by growing EPS at 63% per year over the past five years. Multiconsult is clearly able to grow rapidly while still returning cash to shareholders, positioning it to become a strong dividend payer in the future.
Multiconsult Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance.
