Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like SpareBank 1 Helgeland (OB:HELG). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Quickly Is SpareBank 1 Helgeland Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. We can see that in the last three years SpareBank 1 Helgeland grew its EPS by 13% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. I note that SpareBank 1 Helgeland's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. SpareBank 1 Helgeland maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 41% to kr899m. That's a real positive.

Are SpareBank 1 Helgeland Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that SpareBank 1 Helgeland insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. To be specific, they have kr109m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Even though that's only about 4.5% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. For companies with market capitalizations between kr835m and kr3.3b, like SpareBank 1 Helgeland, the median CEO pay is around kr4.0m.

The SpareBank 1 Helgeland CEO received kr2.8m in compensation for the year ending . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Is SpareBank 1 Helgeland Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One important encouraging feature of SpareBank 1 Helgeland is that it is growing profits. Earnings growth might be the main game for SpareBank 1 Helgeland, but the fun does not stop there. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 1 warning sign for SpareBank 1 Helgeland that you should be aware of.
