Ewein Berhad's (KLSE:EWEIN) investors will be pleased with their strong 214% return over the last three years
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Ewein Berhad (KLSE:EWEIN) share price has soared 182% in the last three years. How nice for those who held the stock! And in the last month, the share price has gained 16%.
With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

While Ewein Berhad made a small profit, in the last year, we think that the market is probably more focussed on the top line growth at the moment. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.
Ewein Berhad actually saw its revenue drop by 54% per year over three years. So the share price gain of 41% per year is quite surprising. It's a good reminder that expectations about the future, not the past history, always impact share prices.
The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between Ewein Berhad's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Ewein Berhad's TSR of 214% for the 3 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
Ewein Berhad shareholders are down 6.0% for the year, but the market itself is up 26%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 14% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Ewein Berhad has 2 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
