Focus Lumber Berhad (KLSE:FLBHD) Is Due To Pay A Dividend Of MYR0.02
The board of Focus Lumber Berhad (KLSE:FLBHD) has announced that it will pay a dividend of MYR0.02 per share on the 22nd of December. This makes the dividend yield 8.3%, which will augment investor returns quite nicely.
Focus Lumber Berhad Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, Focus Lumber Berhad was earning enough to cover the dividend, but free cash flows weren't positive. With the company not bringing in any cash, paying out to shareholders is bound to become difficult at some point.
Looking forward, earnings per share could 32.5% over the next year if the trend of the last few years can't be broken. This will push the company into unprofitability, which means the managers will have to choose between suspending the dividend, or paying it out of cash reserves.

Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was MYR0.04, compared to the most recent full-year payment of MYR0.02. This works out to be a decline of approximately 6.7% per year over that time. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. Over the past five years, it looks as though Focus Lumber Berhad's EPS has declined at around 33% a year. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future.
The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable
Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think Focus Lumber Berhad is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
