Genting Plantations Berhad's (KLSE:GENP) dividend is being reduced by 47% to MYR0.08 per share on 25th of September, in comparison to last year's comparable payment of MYR0.15. The dividend yield of 5.9% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

Genting Plantations Berhad's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, Genting Plantations Berhad's dividend was only 45% of earnings, however it was paying out 126% of free cash flows. While the company may be more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business at this time, we think that a cash payout ratio this high might expose the dividend to being cut if the business ran into some challenges.

Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 27.0% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, our estimates say the payout ratio could reach 87% - on the higher side, but we wouldn't necessarily say this is unsustainable.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2013, the dividend has gone from MYR0.163 total annually to MYR0.34. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7.7% a year over that time. It's good to see the dividend growing at a decent rate, but the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. Genting Plantations Berhad might have put its house in order since then, but we remain cautious.

Dividend Growth Is Doubtful

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. In the last five years, Genting Plantations Berhad's earnings per share has shrunk at approximately 7.5% per annum. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits. Earnings are predicted to grow over the next year, but we would remain cautious until a track record of earnings growth is established.

The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable

In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. While Genting Plantations Berhad is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
