PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad's (KLSE:PETDAG) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad's (KLSE:PETDAG) dividend will be increasing to RM0.10 on 22nd of September. This takes the annual payment to 2.7% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Prior to this announcement, PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad's dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 45% of free cash flows. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 16.0%. If the dividend continues growing along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 79%, which is on the higher side, but certainly still feasible.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least 1 cut in the last 10 years. The first annual payment during the last 10 years was RM0.85 in 2011, and the most recent fiscal year payment was RM0.38. This works out to be a decline of approximately 7.7% per year over that time. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. Over the past five years, it looks as though PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad's EPS has declined at around 3.9% a year. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad will make a great income stock. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
