Perdana Petroleum Berhad (KLSE:PERDANA) rallies 17% this week, taking three-year gains to 64%
While Perdana Petroleum Berhad (KLSE:PERDANA) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 16% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been pleasing. To wit, the share price did better than an index fund, climbing 64% during that period.
Since the stock has added RM67m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During three years of share price growth, Perdana Petroleum Berhad moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd expect the share price to be up.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 1.9% in the twelve months, Perdana Petroleum Berhad shareholders did even worse, losing 41%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 1.0% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Perdana Petroleum Berhad better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance.
