RCE Capital Berhad's (KLSE:RCECAP) Shareholders Will Receive A Smaller Dividend Than Last Year
RCE Capital Berhad (KLSE:RCECAP) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to MYR0.03 on the 31st of December. However, the dividend yield of 4.5% is still a decent boost to shareholder returns.

RCE Capital Berhad's Projections Indicate Future Payments May Be Unsustainable
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, RCE Capital Berhad was paying out 90% of earnings and more than 75% of free cash flows. This indicates that the company is more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business, but we don't think that there are necessarily signs that the dividend might be unsustainable.
Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 32.8% over the next year. However, if the dividend continues along recent trends, it could start putting pressure on the balance sheet with the payout ratio reaching 108% over the next year.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of MYR0.0158 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of MYR0.075. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 17% per annum over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. RCE Capital Berhad hasn't seen much change in its earnings per share over the last five years. RCE Capital Berhad's earnings per share has barely grown, which is not ideal - perhaps this is why the company pays out the majority of its earnings to shareholders. That's fine as far as it goes, but we're less enthusiastic as this often signals that the dividend is likely to grow slower in the future.
In Summary
Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. The track record isn't great, and the payments are a bit high to be considered sustainable. We don't think RCE Capital Berhad is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
