Does Jadi Imaging Holdings Berhad (KLSE:JADI) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?
David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. We note that Jadi Imaging Holdings Berhad (KLSE:JADI) does have debt on its balance sheet. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

What Is Jadi Imaging Holdings Berhad's Net Debt?
As you can see below, Jadi Imaging Holdings Berhad had RM18.6m of debt at December 2021, down from RM20.6m a year prior. However, because it has a cash reserve of RM17.9m, its net debt is less, at about RM638.0k.
How Healthy Is Jadi Imaging Holdings Berhad's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, Jadi Imaging Holdings Berhad had liabilities of RM10.5m due within 12 months, and liabilities of RM23.0m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting this, it had RM17.9m in cash and RM12.3m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by RM3.31m.
Of course, Jadi Imaging Holdings Berhad has a market capitalization of RM107.6m, so these liabilities are probably manageable. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward. But either way, Jadi Imaging Holdings Berhad has virtually no net debt, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load! The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since Jadi Imaging Holdings Berhad will need earnings to service that debt. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
Over 12 months, Jadi Imaging Holdings Berhad reported revenue of RM44m, which is a gain of 5.6%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. We usually like to see faster growth from unprofitable companies, but each to their own.
Caveat Emptor
Importantly, Jadi Imaging Holdings Berhad had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last year. To be specific the EBIT loss came in at RM2.8m. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. We would feel better if it turned its trailing twelve month loss of RM2.0m into a profit. So to be blunt we do think it is risky. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it.
