The five-year decline in earnings for Kobay Technology Bhd KLSE:KOBAY) isn't encouraging, but shareholders are still up 349% over that period
It's been a soft week for Kobay Technology Bhd. (KLSE:KOBAY) shares, which are down 11%. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been spectacular. To be precise, the stock price is 318% higher than it was five years ago, a wonderful performance by any measure. So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. The most important thing for savvy investors to consider is whether the underlying business can justify the share price gain. While the returns over the last 5 years have been good, we do feel sorry for those shareholders who haven't held shares that long, because the share price is down 55% in the last three years.
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Kobay Technology Bhd's earnings per share are down 15% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.
Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
The modest 1.0% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. In contrast revenue growth of 16% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Kobay Technology Bhd is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Kobay Technology Bhd's TSR for the last 5 years was 349%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Kobay Technology Bhd provided a TSR of 7.1% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 35% over five years. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
