HLT Global Berhad's (KLSE:HLT) 26% Share Price Plunge Could Signal Some Risk

HLT Global Berhad (KLSE:HLT) shares have retraced a considerable 26% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 20% share price drop.

Although its price has dipped substantially, when almost half of the companies in Malaysia's Machinery industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.5x, you may still consider HLT Global Berhad as a stock probably not worth researching with its 2.5x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does HLT Global Berhad's Recent Performance Look Like?

For example, consider that HLT Global Berhad's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as HLT Global Berhad's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 42% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 69% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 30% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

With this information, we find it concerning that HLT Global Berhad is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

What We Can Learn From HLT Global Berhad's P/S?

There's still some elevation in HLT Global Berhad's P/S, even if the same can't be said for its share price recently. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that HLT Global Berhad currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. With a revenue decline on investors' minds, the likelihood of a souring sentiment is quite high which could send the P/S back in line with what we'd expect. Should recent medium-term revenue trends persist, it would pose a significant risk to existing shareholders' investments and prospective investors will have a hard time accepting the current value of the stock.
