While some are satisfied with an index fund, active investors aim to find truly magnificent investments on the stock market. When you find (and hold) a big winner, you can markedly improve your finances. For example, the Destini Berhad (KLSE:DESTINI) share price is up a whopping 338% in the last year, a handsome return in a single year. And in the last month, the share price has gained 9.6%. On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 46% in three years.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last year Destini Berhad saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop below zero. While some may see this as temporary, we're a skeptical bunch, and so we're a little surprised to see the share price go up. It may be that the company has done well on other metrics.

Destini Berhad's revenue actually dropped 41% over last year. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Destini Berhad shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 338% over the last year. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 8% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Destini Berhad better, we need to consider many other factors.
