Model Solution (KOSDAQ:417970) Could Easily Take On More Debt
Legendary fund manager Li Lu (who Charlie Munger backed) once said, 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We note that Model Solution Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:417970) does have debt on its balance sheet. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.
What Is Model Solution's Net Debt?
The chart below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Model Solution had ₩11.4b in debt in September 2025; about the same as the year before. But it also has ₩44.8b in cash to offset that, meaning it has ₩33.4b net cash.
How Healthy Is Model Solution's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Model Solution had liabilities of ₩25.1b due within a year, and liabilities of ₩1.05b falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of ₩44.8b and ₩17.7b worth of receivables due within a year. So it can boast ₩36.4b more liquid assets than total liabilities.
This surplus suggests that Model Solution is using debt in a way that is appears to be both safe and conservative. Due to its strong net asset position, it is not likely to face issues with its lenders. Simply put, the fact that Model Solution has more cash than debt is arguably a good indication that it can manage its debt safely.

On top of that, Model Solution grew its EBIT by 66% over the last twelve months, and that growth will make it easier to handle its debt. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since Model Solution will need earnings to service that debt. So when considering debt, it's definitely worth looking at the earnings trend. Click here for an interactive snapshot.
Finally, while the tax-man may adore accounting profits, lenders only accept cold hard cash. Model Solution may have net cash on the balance sheet, but it is still interesting to look at how well the business converts its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, because that will influence both its need for, and its capacity to manage debt. During the last three years, Model Solution generated free cash flow amounting to a very robust 97% of its EBIT, more than we'd expect. That puts it in a very strong position to pay down debt.
Summing Up
While it is always sensible to investigate a company's debt, in this case Model Solution has ₩33.4b in net cash and a decent-looking balance sheet. And it impressed us with free cash flow of ₩3.9b, being 97% of its EBIT. The bottom line is that we do not find Model Solution's debt levels at all concerning. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Model Solution that you should be aware of.
