Investors three-year losses continue as Ubiquoss (KOSDAQ:264450) dips a further 10% this week, earnings continue to decline
Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But if you try your hand at stock picking, you risk returning less than the market. We regret to report that long term Ubiquoss Inc. (KOSDAQ:264450) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 50% in three years, versus a market decline of about 16%. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 32% in a year. Unfortunately the share price momentum is still quite negative, with prices down 20% in thirty days. This could be related to the recent financial results - you can catch up on the most recent data by reading our company report.
Since Ubiquoss has shed ₩12b from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the three years that the share price fell, Ubiquoss' earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 13% each year. The share price decline of 21% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past. This increased caution is also evident in the rather low P/E ratio, which is sitting at 5.99.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Ubiquoss, it has a TSR of -46% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that Ubiquoss shareholders are down 29% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 4.9%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 2% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Ubiquoss better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Ubiquoss you should be aware of, and 1 of them doesn't sit too well with us.
