As a general rule, we think profitable companies are less risky than companies that lose money. However, sometimes companies receive a one-off boost (or reduction) to their profit, and it's not always clear whether statutory profits are a good guide, going forward. This article will consider whether Vidente's (KOSDAQ:121800) statutory profits are a good guide to its underlying earnings.

While Vidente was able to generate revenue of ₩13.5b in the last twelve months, we think its profit result of ₩13.6b was more important. Even though revenue is down over the last three years, you can see in the chart below that the company has moved from loss-making to profitable.

Not all profits are equal, and we can learn more about the nature of a company's past profitability by diving deeper into the financial statements. In this article we'll look at how Vidente is impacting shareholders by issuing new shares, as well as how unusual items have affected the income line. Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. Click here to be taken to our balance sheet analysis of Vidente.

In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. Vidente expanded the number of shares on issue by 34% over the last year. As a result, its net income is now split between a greater number of shares. To talk about net income, without noticing earnings per share, is to be distracted by the big numbers while ignoring the smaller numbers that talk to per share value. A Look At The Impact Of Vidente's Dilution on Its Earnings Per Share (EPS).

Vidente was losing money three years ago. And even focusing only on the last twelve months, we don't have a meaningful growth rate because it made a loss a year ago, too. What we do know is that while it's great to see a profit over the last twelve months, that profit would have been better, on a per share basis, if the company hadn't needed to issue shares. So you can see that the dilution has had a fairly significant impact on shareholders.

If Vidente's EPS can grow over time then that drastically improves the chances of the share price moving in the same direction. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Alongside that dilution, it's also important to note that Vidente's profit suffered from unusual items, which reduced profit by ₩2.8b in the last twelve months. It's never great to see unusual items costing the company profits, but on the upside, things might improve sooner rather than later. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And that's hardly a surprise given these line items are considered unusual. Vidente took a rather significant hit from unusual items in the year to September 2020. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items made its statutory profit significantly weaker than it would otherwise be.

Our Take On Vidente's Profit Performance

To sum it all up, Vidente took a hit from unusual items which pushed its profit down; without that, it would have made more money. But unfortunately the dilution means that shareholders now own a smaller proportion of the company (assuming they maintained the same number of shares). That will weigh on earnings per share, even if it is not reflected in net income. Given the contrasting considerations, we don't have a strong view as to whether Vidente's profits are an apt reflection of its underlying potential for profit. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing Vidente at this point in time. For example - Vidente has 3 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
