Suprema HQ Inc. (KOSDAQ:094840) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 25%
The Suprema HQ Inc. (KOSDAQ:094840) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 25%. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 4.2% isn't as impressive.
Although its price has surged higher, Suprema HQ may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.9x, since almost half of all companies in Korea have P/E ratios greater than 11x and even P/E's higher than 22x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
For example, consider that Suprema HQ's financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Suprema HQ's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 43%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year EPS growth is still a noteworthy 8.5% in total. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 33% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.
With this information, we can see why Suprema HQ is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
The Bottom Line On Suprema HQ's P/E
Despite Suprema HQ's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Suprema HQ maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
