OPTRONTEC's (KOSDAQ:082210) Earnings Might Not Be As Promising As They Seem
Investors appear disappointed with OPTRONTEC Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:082210) recent earnings, despite the decent statutory profit number. We did some digging and found some worrying factors that they might be paying attention to.
A Closer Look At OPTRONTEC's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
For the year to December 2024, OPTRONTEC had an accrual ratio of 0.54. As a general rule, that bodes poorly for future profitability. To wit, the company did not generate one whit of free cashflow in that time. Even though it reported a profit of ₩26.8b, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through ₩54b in the last year. We also note that OPTRONTEC's free cash flow was actually negative last year as well, so we could understand if shareholders were bothered by its outflow of ₩54b. However, that's not the end of the story. We must also consider the impact of unusual items on statutory profit (and thus the accrual ratio), as well as note the ramifications of the company issuing new shares.

One essential aspect of assessing earnings quality is to look at how much a company is diluting shareholders. As it happens, OPTRONTEC issued 30% more new shares over the last year. As a result, its net income is now split between a greater number of shares. To talk about net income, without noticing earnings per share, is to be distracted by the big numbers while ignoring the smaller numbers that talk to per share value. A Look At The Impact Of OPTRONTEC's Dilution On Its Earnings Per Share (EPS)
Three years ago, OPTRONTEC lost money. On the bright side, in the last twelve months it grew profit by 1,004%. But EPS was less impressive, up only 848% in that time. So you can see that the dilution has had a fairly significant impact on shareholders.
In the long term, earnings per share growth should beget share price growth. So it will certainly be a positive for shareholders if OPTRONTEC can grow EPS persistently. However, if its profit increases while its earnings per share stay flat (or even fall) then shareholders might not see much benefit. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.
The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
The fact that the company had unusual items boosting profit by ₩43b, in the last year, probably goes some way to explain why its accrual ratio was so weak. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. OPTRONTEC had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to December 2024. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.
Our Take On OPTRONTEC's Profit Performance
In conclusion, OPTRONTEC's weak accrual ratio suggested its statutory earnings have been inflated by the unusual items. The dilution means the results are weaker when viewed from a per-share perspective. For all the reasons mentioned above, we think that, at a glance, OPTRONTEC's statutory profits could be considered to be low quality, because they are likely to give investors an overly positive impression of the company.
