One essential aspect of assessing earnings quality is to look at how much a company is diluting shareholders. In fact, 3S KOREA increased the number of shares on issue by 5.2% over the last twelve months by issuing new shares. As a result, its net income is now split between a greater number of shares. To celebrate net income while ignoring dilution is like rejoicing because you have a single slice of a larger pizza, but ignoring the fact that the pizza is now cut into many more slices. How Is Dilution Impacting 3S KOREA's Earnings Per Share (EPS)?

3S KOREA has improved its profit over the last three years, with an annualized gain of 275% in that time. But EPS was only up 248% per year, in the exact same period. And at a glance the 82% gain in profit over the last year impresses. But in comparison, EPS only increased by 80% over the same period. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is influencing shareholder earnings.

Changes in the share price do tend to reflect changes in earnings per share, in the long run. So 3S KOREA shareholders will want to see that EPS figure continue to increase. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For that reason, you could say that EPS is more important that net income in the long run, assuming the goal is to assess whether a company's share price might grow.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit

Finally, we should also consider the fact that unusual items boosted 3S KOREA's net profit by ₩1.4b over the last year. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. 3S KOREA had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to March 2024. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

Our Take On 3S KOREA's Profit Performance

In its last report 3S KOREA benefitted from unusual items which boosted its profit, which could make the profit seem better than it really is on a sustainable basis. And furthermore, it went and issued plenty of new shares, ensuring that each shareholder (who did not tip more money in) now owns a smaller proportion of the company. Considering all this we'd argue 3S KOREA's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability.
