PC Direct, Inc. (KOSDAQ:051380) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 27%

To the annoyance of some shareholders, PC Direct, Inc. (KOSDAQ:051380) shares are down a considerable 27% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 32% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies operating in Korea's Electronic industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.8x, you may still consider PC Direct as an attractive investment with its 0.1x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does PC Direct's Recent Performance Look Like?

The recent revenue growth at PC Direct would have to be considered satisfactory if not spectacular. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this good revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For PC Direct?

PC Direct's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 5.7% last year. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 3.7% overall drop in revenue. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 12% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

In light of this, it's understandable that PC Direct's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What Does PC Direct's P/S Mean For Investors?

PC Direct's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

It's no surprise that PC Direct maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with PC Direct (at least 2 which don't sit too well with us), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
