Here's Why Intops (KOSDAQ:049070) Can Manage Its Debt Responsibly
Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. Importantly, Intops Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:049070) does carry debt. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt A Problem?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Intops Carry?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that at September 2024 Intops had debt of ₩34.2b, up from ₩20.5b in one year. However, it does have ₩236.0b in cash offsetting this, leading to net cash of ₩201.8b.
A Look At Intops' Liabilities
According to the last reported balance sheet, Intops had liabilities of ₩119.1b due within 12 months, and liabilities of ₩11.0b due beyond 12 months. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of ₩236.0b as well as receivables valued at ₩71.6b due within 12 months. So it can boast ₩177.5b more liquid assets than total liabilities.
This excess liquidity is a great indication that Intops' balance sheet is almost as strong as Fort Knox. With this in mind one could posit that its balance sheet means the company is able to handle some adversity. Succinctly put, Intops boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load!
In fact Intops's saving grace is its low debt levels, because its EBIT has tanked 62% in the last twelve months. When it comes to paying off debt, falling earnings are no more useful than sugary sodas are for your health. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Intops can strengthen its balance sheet over time. But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. Intops may have net cash on the balance sheet, but it is still interesting to look at how well the business converts its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, because that will influence both its need for, and its capacity to manage debt. Over the most recent three years, Intops recorded free cash flow worth 66% of its EBIT, which is around normal, given free cash flow excludes interest and tax. This free cash flow puts the company in a good position to pay down debt, when appropriate.
Summing Up
While it is always sensible to investigate a company's debt, in this case Intops has ₩201.8b in net cash and a decent-looking balance sheet. The cherry on top was that in converted 66% of that EBIT to free cash flow, bringing in -₩65b. So we don't think Intops's use of debt is risky.
