H&S Hightech's (KOSDAQ:044990) Promising Earnings May Rest On Soft Foundations
Unsurprisingly, H&S Hightech Corp.'s (KOSDAQ:044990) stock price was strong on the back of its healthy earnings report. However, our analysis suggests that shareholders may be missing some factors that indicate the earnings result was not as good as it looked.
Zooming In On H&S Hightech's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Over the twelve months to June 2026, H&S Hightech recorded an accrual ratio of 0.27. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow fell significantly short of its reported profits. Even though it reported a profit of ₩12.4b, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through ₩4.0b in the last year. We saw that FCF was ₩12b a year ago though, so H&S Hightech has at least been able to generate positive FCF in the past. One positive for H&S Hightech shareholders is that it's accrual ratio was significantly better last year, providing reason to believe that it may return to stronger cash conversion in the future. Shareholders should look for improved cashflow relative to profit in the current year, if that is indeed the case.

Our Take On H&S Hightech's Profit Performance
H&S Hightech didn't convert much of its profit to free cash flow in the last year, which some investors may consider rather suboptimal. Therefore, it seems possible to us that H&S Hightech's true underlying earnings power is actually less than its statutory profit. The good news is that, its earnings per share increased by 33% in the last year. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider.
