ALUX Co., Ltd.'s (KOSDAQ:475580) Stock Retreats 27% But Earnings Haven't Escaped The Attention Of Investors
ALUX Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:475580) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 27% share price drop in the last month. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, given close to half the companies in Korea have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 11x, you may still consider ALUX as a stock to avoid entirely with its 49.1x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, ALUX's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as ALUX's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 54%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 85% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 79% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 21%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we can see why ALUX is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price drop, ALUX's P/E still exceeds the rest of the market significantly. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of ALUX's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
