Returns On Capital Signal Difficult Times Ahead For Plantynet (KOSDAQ:075130)
When it comes to investing, there are some useful financial metrics that can warn us when a business is potentially in trouble. A business that's potentially in decline often shows two trends, a return on capital employed (ROCE) that's declining, and a base of capital employed that's also declining. This indicates to us that the business is not only shrinking the size of its net assets, but its returns are falling as well. So after glancing at the trends within Plantynet (KOSDAQ:075130), we weren't too hopeful.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for Plantynet, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.023 = ₩1.9b ÷ (₩96b - ₩11b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
So, Plantynet has an ROCE of 2.3%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the IT industry average of 7.5%.

How Are Returns Trending?
There is reason to be cautious about Plantynet, given the returns are trending downwards. About five years ago, returns on capital were 3.4%, however they're now substantially lower than that as we saw above. Meanwhile, capital employed in the business has stayed roughly the flat over the period. This combination can be indicative of a mature business that still has areas to deploy capital, but the returns received aren't as high due potentially to new competition or smaller margins. If these trends continue, we wouldn't expect Plantynet to turn into a multi-bagger.
What We Can Learn From Plantynet's ROCE
All in all, the lower returns from the same amount of capital employed aren't exactly signs of a compounding machine. Yet despite these concerning fundamentals, the stock has performed strongly with a 59% return over the last five years, so investors appear very optimistic. Regardless, we don't feel too comfortable with the fundamentals so we'd be steering clear of this stock for now.
