Unfortunately for some shareholders, the HAESUNG DS Co., Ltd. (KRX:195870) share price has dived 27% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 53% share price decline.

Since its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies in Korea have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 12x, you may consider HAESUNG DS as an attractive investment with its 7.4x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for HAESUNG DS as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. If not, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

How Is HAESUNG DS' Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, HAESUNG DS would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 48%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 154% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 18% per annum as estimated by the nine analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 20% per year, which is not materially different.

In light of this, it's peculiar that HAESUNG DS' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

What We Can Learn From HAESUNG DS' P/E?

HAESUNG DS' P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that HAESUNG DS currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is in line with the wider market. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for HAESUNG DS that you need to be mindful of.
