Risks Still Elevated At These Prices As SK hynix Inc. (KRX:000660) Shares Dive 27%
SK hynix Inc. (KRX:000660) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 27% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 44%, which is great even in a bull market.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given close to half the companies operating in Korea's Semiconductor industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.7x, you may still consider SK hynix as a stock to potentially avoid with its 3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does SK hynix's Recent Performance Look Like?
With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, SK hynix has been doing relatively well. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, SK hynix would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 6.8% last year. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 21% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 33% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 33% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we find it interesting that SK hynix is trading at a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On SK hynix's P/S
Despite the recent share price weakness, SK hynix's P/S remains higher than most other companies in the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Given SK hynix's future revenue forecasts are in line with the wider industry, the fact that it trades at an elevated P/S is somewhat surprising. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
