Some Confidence Is Lacking In Russell Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:217500) As Shares Slide 25%
Russell Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:217500) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 25% share price drop in the last month. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 56% loss during that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, given close to half the companies in Korea have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 10x, you may still consider Russell as a stock to avoid entirely with its 22.2x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for Russell as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Russell's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 33%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 23% drop in EPS in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 33% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.
With this information, we find it concerning that Russell is trading at a P/E higher than the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price drop, Russell's P/E still exceeds the rest of the market significantly. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of Russell revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given the market is set to grow. When we see earnings heading backwards and underperforming the market forecasts, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 3 warning signs for Russell you should be aware of, and 1 of them is potentially serious.
