Revenues Not Telling The Story For Finetek Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:131760) After Shares Rise 36%
Finetek Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:131760) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 36% share price jump in the last month. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 12% is also fairly reasonable.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Finetek's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Korea's Semiconductor industry is similar at about 1x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has Finetek Performed Recently?
The revenue growth achieved at Finetek over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to only keep up with the broader industry, which has keeping the P/S in line with expectations. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Finetek would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 19% last year. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 45% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it interesting that Finetek is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. They may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
What Does Finetek's P/S Mean For Investors?
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Finetek's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Finetek's average P/S is a bit surprising since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. When we see weak revenue with slower than industry growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, bringing the P/S back in line with expectations. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
