Will Weakness in Jeju Semiconductor Corp.'s (KOSDAQ:080220) Stock Prove Temporary Given Strong Fundamentals?
It is hard to get excited after looking at Jeju Semiconductor's (KOSDAQ:080220) recent performance, when its stock has declined 31% over the past three months. But if you pay close attention, you might gather that its strong financials could mean that the stock could potentially see an increase in value in the long-term, given how markets usually reward companies with good financial health. Specifically, we decided to study Jeju Semiconductor's ROE in this article.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
ROE can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Jeju Semiconductor is:
10% = ₩18b ÷ ₩174b (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
The 'return' is the yearly profit. So, this means that for every ₩1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of ₩0.10.
What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
Jeju Semiconductor's Earnings Growth And 10% ROE
On the face of it, Jeju Semiconductor's ROE is not much to talk about. Although a closer study shows that the company's ROE is higher than the industry average of 7.6% which we definitely can't overlook. Even more so after seeing Jeju Semiconductor's exceptional 36% net income growth over the past five years. Bear in mind, the company does have a moderately low ROE. It is just that the industry ROE is lower. So, there might well be other reasons for the earnings to grow. For example, it is possible that the broader industry is going through a high growth phase, or that the company has a low payout ratio.
As a next step, we compared Jeju Semiconductor's net income growth with the industry, and pleasingly, we found that the growth seen by the company is higher than the average industry growth of 14%.
Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if Jeju Semiconductor is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
Is Jeju Semiconductor Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
Jeju Semiconductor doesn't pay any regular dividends currently which essentially means that it has been reinvesting all of its profits into the business. This definitely contributes to the high earnings growth number that we discussed above.
Summary
Overall, we are quite pleased with Jeju Semiconductor's performance. In particular, it's great to see that the company has seen significant growth in its earnings backed by a respectable ROE and a high reinvestment rate.
