We Think INTEKPLUS (KOSDAQ:064290) Has A Fair Chunk Of Debt
The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that INTEKPLUS Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:064290) does use debt in its business. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is INTEKPLUS's Net Debt?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of June 2024 INTEKPLUS had ₩44.8b of debt, an increase on ₩22.5b, over one year. However, it does have ₩20.4b in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about ₩24.4b.
How Strong Is INTEKPLUS' Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that INTEKPLUS had liabilities of ₩81.9b due within a year, and liabilities of ₩252.0m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of ₩20.4b and ₩18.8b worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling ₩42.9b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
INTEKPLUS has a market capitalization of ₩144.9b, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if INTEKPLUS can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
In the last year INTEKPLUS's revenue was pretty flat, and it made a negative EBIT. While that hardly impresses, its not too bad either.
Caveat Emptor
Importantly, INTEKPLUS had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last year. Indeed, it lost ₩9.8b at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. However, it doesn't help that it burned through ₩10.0b of cash over the last year. So suffice it to say we consider the stock very risky. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. These risks can be hard to spot. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for INTEKPLUS you should know about.
