While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Telechips Inc. (KOSDAQ:054450) share price up 12% in a single quarter. But in truth the last year hasn't been good for the share price. After all, the share price is down 45% in the last year, significantly under-performing the market.

After losing 10% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last year Telechips saw its earnings per share drop below zero. Some investors no doubt dumped the stock as a result. Of course, if the company can turn the situation around, investors will likely profit.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Telechips shareholders are down 44% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 3.9%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 6%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Telechips better, we need to consider many other factors.
